Teach Me Tuesday – Tray

Hey All!

I am going to start out a bit somber today.  It is Tuesday, September 11th which always stirs up so many emotions in me and other Americans.  I wanted to share this image with you, taken by a local Atlantan photographer Rick Holliday.  Every year my children’s high school pays tribute to the victims who lost their lives on this tragic day.  It is one of the most beautiful memorials I have ever seen.  This is on the front lawn of the school and is put up by students, local firefighters and parents.  There is a flag to represent each victim.  It is stunning!

Please take a few minutes to remember today.  Okay …

It’s Teach Me Tuesday!  I got through my Monday but will freely admit I took a little kinda long nap.  There are some days where a nap is just the only thing that will cure your ails.  Am I right?  In my Dad’s case, a nap cures everything since he takes one everyday.  Here is a funny nap story about my Dad.

All my Dad’s grandchildren were making fun of him because he always fell asleep in his chair after a long day on the golf course.  Yes, he has quite the life – golf and naps daily!  One day my Dad decides that he is not going to nap anymore so he announces this revelation to the group.  His brilliant idea was that every time he closed his eyes, the kids could squirt him in the face with a water bottle.  This went on for about 4 days with my Dad receiving several several squirts to the face a day.  Finally by Friday (yep – he made it a whole five days) he went to the kids and said “I’ll take the squirt ahead a time, just please let me take a nap!”  I always laugh thinking about my Dad standing there letting his grandkids squirt him between the eyes with water just for a nap.  My Dad is hysterical – I could do an entire blog on his antics alone.  Enough of the naps stories … it is making me sleepy.  On to Teach Me Tuesday!

Today I want to share with you a simple project with a big impact.  I have been doing a lot of complaining lately about how much brown is in my family room.  I decided to make a little change on the coffee table to liven things up a bit.  On the table was a tray that I got years ago from the Pottery Barn outlet.

B-O-R-I-N-G and brown.  Check out what a little Valspar spray paint in Exotic Sea does for this dull and uninteresting tray!

TA-DA!  Is this one happy looking tray or what?  Simple … no primer – no sanding – just two coats of spray paint.  Makes me happier than finding the last box of Girl Scout cookies in the freezer in August!

I just gathered a few items from around the house to put on the tray.  The color on the tray makes the items really “pop”.  Those are pistachios in the wooden bowl.  We always have pistachios sitting out somewhere.  My whole family loves them!

The little glass bowl in front I picked up at Goodwill for .25 cents.  Perfect for throwing the pistachio shells into and still has a little character.  I love the way the blue tray reflects off the “fake” cut crystal bowl.

I will admit, when I told the Hubs I was going to spray paint the tray turquoise he made the “what are you thinking?” face.  Do you know this face?  Guess who was the first person to say how much they liked the tray?  Yep – that’s right …the face-maker. Ha! I love it when I am right!

I hope you are inspired to take a can of spray paint to something you own.  I’d spray paint my dogs if they’d let me.  They are brown.

Hope your life is more turquoise and naps heaven than boring brown, squirt in the face havoc!
