Special Saturday Post – Olympic Quiz Answers

Good Saturday Morning!  I am not usually here on Saturdays, but I know you have probably not slept last night thinking about how many Olympic Quiz answers you got correct.  I will put you out of your misery:

 1. “Which of these cities has never hosted the Games?”

The correct answer is Madrid.  In 1992, the Summer Olympics were held in Barcelona, Spain.  Madrid has never been host to the Olympic games.

2.  True or false. The United States has never won a gold medal in any fencing event that is currently still part of the Olympics?

  • False
The correct answer is False.  Mariel Zagunis (U.S. flag bearer) has won a gold.  When Mariel won the women’s individual sabre event in Athens, she A) won the first ever gold medal in sabre B) won the first gold medal in fencing for the U.S. in 100 years and C) became the first American woman to win a fencing medal.  Go Mariel!!

3. When were women first allowed to compete in the modern Olympics?

  • 1896
  • 1900
  • 1904
  • 1908
The correct answer is 1900.  Women first competed at the 1900 Paris Games. Women were allowed to compete in lawn tennis and golf, though there were three French women competing in croquet and there was at least one woman sailor as part of mixed crews.
4. One of the events in which men compete directly with women is Sailing. Which is the other?
  • Fencing
  • Gymnastics
  • Triathlon
  • Equestrian
The correct answer is Equestrian.   All three equestrian sports, Dressage, 3 Day Eventing & Show Jumping are the only Olympic sports to feature individual men and women competing against one another.
